Earwax (cerumen) is a natural substance produced by the ear canal to protect and lubricate the ear. It's not a sign of poor hygiene — everyone produces it. But when you wear a hearing aid, earwax can cause real problems.

Blocked sound outlet
The most common issue. Earwax accumulates on the speaker or sound outlet of the hearing aid, blocking sound from reaching the ear. The result is muffled, reduced, or absent sound — even though the hearing aid appears to be working.

Clogged microphone ports
Earwax and debris can also block the tiny microphone openings, reducing the hearing aid's ability to pick up sound. This is more common with in-canal styles like CIC aids.

Internal damage
If earwax penetrates the hearing aid's casing, it can damage internal components. This is less common with modern designs but remains a risk, particularly with CIC aids that sit deep in the ear canal.

Which Hearing Aid Styles Are Most Affected?
